{"id":77,"date":"2011-04-21T00:42:19","date_gmt":"2011-04-21T00:42:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/matthewcochran.net\/blog\/?p=77"},"modified":"2019-03-24T07:17:29","modified_gmt":"2019-03-24T11:17:29","slug":"when-do-whatever-you-want-means-i-dont-care-about-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/matthewcochran.net\/blog\/when-do-whatever-you-want-means-i-dont-care-about-you\/","title":{"rendered":"When &#8220;Do Whatever You Want&#8221; Means &#8220;I Don&#8217;t Care About You&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As usual, if you need Jesus to wink and nod at a sin, you&#8217;ll need to come up with a fictional Jesus.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/articles\/264914\/defining-divinity-down-kathryn-jean-lopez\">According to NRO<\/a>, Notre Dame grad Theresa Rebek has done just that in her play &#8220;O Beautiful&#8221; in which Jesus apparently gives the go ahead for abortion because he&#8217;s such a nice guy:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The dialogue includes a gal asking Christ: \u201cDid you ever say, \u2018I\u2019m Jesus, and I say that stupid girls who let guys talk them into going to the back seat of their cars have to have babies?\u2019 Did you say that ever?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cNo,\u201d Jesus replies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cAll you talk about is, be nice to each other!\u201d the teenager continues. \u201cYou never said nobody\u2019s allowed to have an abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The fictional Jesus confirms her assertion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cSo can I? Can I? Can I?\u201d she asks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cHonestly, I \u2014 I don\u2019t really have an issue with it,\u201d Jesus tells her.<\/p>\n<p>You know something is atrocious when even a small selection provokes numerous objections so obvious that they need no more than a sentence of two to expound.\u00a0 For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anyone who thinks Jesus basically taught &#8220;be nice&#8221; hasn&#8217;t seriously read his teachings lately.<\/li>\n<li>The reason women have to have babies when they go into in the back seat of a car is that humans reproduce sexually.\u00a0 Abortion is something people do with the babies they already have.<\/li>\n<li>Anyone who really did teach &#8220;be nice to each other&#8221; is going to have a problem with a girl who wants to murder someone who got in her way simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.<\/li>\n<li>Who would have thought that the sexual revolution would so quickly move us &#8220;back&#8221; to women merely being passive recipients of sex?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now that we&#8217;re done shooting, however, I&#8217;d like to address one of the assumptions that underlies this barrel of rotting fish.\u00a0 Is &#8220;ok&#8221; really a kind\/loving\/compassionate response to &#8220;I wanna&#8221; in situations like this?\u00a0 Obviously, when &#8220;OK&#8221; means intentionally killing an innocent child, it&#8217;s hardly loving to the victim.\u00a0 But is it even compassionate to the mother?<\/p>\n<p>I remember one high school summer during which I was approached by a young woman who knew me by name, but whom I did not recognize. She gave me her name and said she knew me from school, but I had to confess that I couldn&#8217;t remember her.\u00a0 Then she tried to spark my memory by saying \u201cI&#8217;m the one who had the abortion.\u201d\u00a0 Not \u201cwe were in the same gym class\u201d or anything like that, just \u201cI&#8217;m the one who had the abortion.\u201d\u00a0 Of course my blue state high school had over 3,000 students at the time, and I seriously doubt she was <em>the one<\/em> who had <em>the<\/em> abortion.\u00a0 In retrospect, however, it became obvious that that&#8217;s how she thought of herself and how she assumed everyone else thought of her as well.\u00a0 It was how she identified herself to someone she couldn&#8217;t have known too well when any number of facts would have done a better job (I still can&#8217;t remember her from before that day).\u00a0 It was one of the foremost things on her mind, it was something she considered unique to her, and she felt guilty enough over it to confess it to anyone.\u00a0 She knew exactly what she had done, and she was suffering for it.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know the circumstances of the procedure.\u00a0 I do not know who drove her there or paid for it, but it is probably safe to assume that they did so out of an attempt at compassion.\u00a0 They wanted to save her from a bad situation, but all they did was replace a difficult burden with an impossible one.\u00a0 Life isn&#8217;t easy for the single mothers I&#8217;ve known, but I&#8217;ve seen them succeed.\u00a0 How exactly does one succeed at bearing the burden of having murdered one\u2019s own child when the accusation comes from the conscience?\u00a0 Does she forget?\u00a0 Beat her conscience until it falls silent?\u00a0 Pretend that it doesn&#8217;t matter or that there&#8217;s no problem with what she did?\u00a0 The one who says &#8220;do whatever you want&#8221; nudges her down an impossible path.\u00a0 We simply cannot bear the weight of our own sins; only Christ can do that for us.<\/p>\n<p>Christians know what a compassionate God would really do because we know what He <em>did<\/em> do.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t dismissing her actions as irrelevant;
