This is good and right, for our physical natures are remarkable and worthy of invoking praise for our Creator. Though sin has subjected our bodies to sickness, decay, and eventually death, the glory of God’s craftsmanship still shines through the rot of the Fall.

God’s Self-Portrait

But just as amazing as how humans are constructed is what humans mean. As Scripture says:

So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

There is much that could be (and has been) said about what it means that man is made in the image of God. The early Lutherans, for example, pointed to man being made with an inherent righteousness (which was subsequently lost in the Fall.) A multitude of other theologians and philosophers have pointed to features that distinguish man from the animals such as a rational mind, free (or at least “freer”) will, or a capacity to be creative.

These are all sound observations, of course, but what strikes me as the most amazing is this: Our Triune God (whom we describe as three Persons sharing one Substance) created man in a way that mirrors that Trinity. God creates man from the dust of the earth and breathes life into him. Woman is then created from the flesh of man’s side–begotten from his very substance. And when woman and man unite as one flesh, a new life proceeds from them both which shares that same flesh and blood. In a very tangible sense, God created man to be multiple persons who share the same substance. And it’s hard not to see this as analogous to the Father who begets the Son from eternity and the Spirit who proceeds from both. We are God’s self portrait, wrought from the matter of creation and then placed at its head.

Because of this glorious nature, it’s quite right that we are appointed to represent God to the rest of Creation. God told us to fill and take dominion over the Earth along with all of its inhabitants. Adam exercised this ownership and responsibility by naming every other creature. This hierarchy is the natural order of the world from before mankind’s Fall into sin, and the fact that this Fall subjected all the rest of creation to death and futility only underscores the reality of man’s God-given place.

But as amazing as this is, it is not the entire story, for while man represents God, he is not God. And so now that we’ve considered the flow of meaning from God to man to the world, we must consider the other direction as well.

The Creature Between God and Creation

Just as man represents God to the rest of creation, man also represents the rest of creation to God. The earth is not simply our plaything, but rather God placed man in the Garden to tend to it. Our dominion is not capricious; we are accountable to God for it because our authority was delegated from Him. Accordingly, we, as creatures, respond to God and do so on behalf of those under our dominion. All creation can praise the Lord, but man can put that praise into words and songs and physical arts in ways that the rest of nature simply cannot. Likewise, Christians today pray and intercede for the whole world, and this is in no way a deviation from what we would have done had we never fallen into sin.

So while God created us in His image, He simultaneously created us in ways that remind us we are creatures ourselves. We are not begotten from eternity, but from within time. To live, we require many kinds of nourishment from what God has created. We rule creation, but when we are born, we are utterly helpless and dependent. And whereas the three Persons of the Trinity are coequal in every way, human persons reflect the same hierarchy which God put into creation in many and various ways. Parents represent God to their children, and children represent creation to their parents. Children therefore submit to their parents because their nature is to learn & grow. And yes, husbands represent God to their wives, while wives represent creation to their husbands. Husbands therefore love their wives, and wives therefore submit to their husbands because her God-given nature is to help man fill the earth and take dominion over it.

As one might expect, this other direction from creation to man to God ultimately explains the nature of the designed differences between men and women.

Male and Female He Created Them

Perhaps the most obviously observable difference is in stature. Men are, in general, both larger and stronger than women, and women expect us to be (dating life isn’t easy for short or weak men.) Men are this way because of what we represent to women. Nevertheless, though we mean God, we are creatures ourselves, and so along with our strength is our paradoxical drive to advance, build, and improve ourselves–to become stronger and more accomplished.

Men are always becoming, and we need to become because another part of God’s nature that we share is to lovingly give of ourselves to those in our care, just as God gave Himself for the world He loved. We must give. We must provide. We must also replenish the parts of ourselves we sacrifice because we are finite and ultimately dependent upon God. A man who does not accomplish is less than what God designed him to be. While modern women may complain about being held back from authority & accomplishment, they are notoriously averse to adopting the responsibility and consequences men bear for failure because their nature is different from a man’s.

But just as self-evident is the disparity in beauty between men and women. Women are more beautiful than men because they are more perfect symbols: a creature herself who represents creation to her husband. Whereas a man must perpetually become, women, in far more respects than men, already are. A woman’s beauty is attained mostly passively as she grows. Many parents observe that girls mature faster than boys, and they are correct. This is simply a product of our respective natures.

What’s more, while a man is only regarded for what he is able to accomplish, a woman is regarded simply for being who she is. Indeed, she receives such a surfeit of love and attention that she simply dismisses a huge portion of it as beneath her. Modern men may complain that they have long lists of traits they must acquire to attract women while women basically just have to avoid overeating, but this, too, is merely a difference in the natures God has given us.

I could go on, but let these two suffice as examples for the overall point: men and women differ in both nature and authority because they are the warp & woof of how God reminds those of us who mean God that we are not, in fact, God Himself.

No Fear of Missing Out

But while a woman might envy a man’s accomplishments and consequent recognition, or a man might envy the relatively effortless regard a woman receives, God has designed matters so that neither truly misses out. Women still experience authority and strength, but they generally do so by having children. She is still under the authority of her husband (just as he is still under the authority of God), but nature itself ensures that she will be making countless decisions on the day-to-day details in the life of their family. She might not build the nest, but she will be the one to feather it and make it more than it otherwise would be.

Women likewise get to experience self-giving love and sacrifice because they give of themselves to sacrifice for their children. She feeds them from her own body. She carries them to term in a way that is both beautiful and limiting for her. While she may represent creation to her husband, she still represents God to her children. She brings them forth; she creates for them; she builds for them; and she becomes new things for their sake.

On the other side, there is a time when a man experiences the same kind of unconditional love that women receive–when he does not have to struggle to be regarded. We primarily experience this while we are children when our parents care for our every need. That love extends into adulthood as long as our mother & father remain with us on Earth–in regard, if not in complete material support. And had history gone differently, it wouldn’t have ended there only for us to stare into the void as adults, because we would still experience God’s unconditional love for us. But while we cannot experience this directly the way Adam did before the Fall, we can at least still know it’s there because God sent His only Son to die for our salvation.

Sin’s Toll

Sin does have its say in this life, though, and it twists these good differences into temptations. We no longer see ourselves as different persons sharing one substance. We compete over that substance instead. A man still struggles to become, but now success tempts him with hubris while failure and its consequences tempt him to despair. Nature still grants love and beauty to a woman, but now she reacts to them with entitlement rather than gratitude, and faces their inexorable loss as she ages. Women usurp authority from men while men get lazy and expect regard without work. Both sexes envy the blessings of the other and blame each other for being what they are. God’s design is regarded as a curse, and men & women alike seek escape from their respective sexes.

Likewise, what the sexes mean also has an impact on what our sins mean. There’s a reason sexual sin is routinely treated as particularly heinous in Scripture. It’s natural that God hates divorce when it rips his own image to shreds. It makes perfect sense that adultery is the go-to image for idolatry when man represents God to his wife. The meaning of the sexes also provides a rationale for why Satan rages so hard against the family. He hates nothing more than strong & virtuous men, chaste & submissive women, and happy & obedient children because they all represent not only harmony with God, but God Himself.

The blame for all this lies not with God’s design, however, but with sin. And the misery sin imposes on us is not relieved by vandalizing God’s image even more. The only salve is finding ways to better conform to it. This is precisely what God exhorts us to do in Scripture when He gives men and women different instructions. Christians begin cleaning up God’s beautiful artwork that our sin has defaced rather than defacing it even more as the pagans do.

To be sure, this sanctification is never complete in this life, but the perfect reality that God created will be waiting for us in the new heavens and the new earth. There, we will continue to be male and female, but we will learn ever new ways of appreciating God’s artistry instead of inventing ways to escape it.

When Christians speak of how we are fearfully and wonderfully made, we often dwell on God’s intricate design of the human body.
